The Recycle Better course, developed by Sustain Dane in partnership with the City of Madison, is set to return on Friday, May 17, 2024. For the first time since its inception in 2021, the course will be offered in person. Over a thousand individuals have participated in this program so far.

The primary objective of the Recycle Better course is to educate participants about the importance and methods of recycling more effectively. The course also aims to empower individuals to become Certified Recycling Stewards, equipping them with the necessary tools to educate their communities about improved recycling practices.

The inaugural in-person session will take place from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm at 821 East Washington Avenue. Prospective attendees must register beforehand and a small tuition fee of $15 is required. However, for those who find this cost burdensome, they are encouraged to contact Lorenza Zebell at Sustain Dane regarding possible tuition waivers. An online version of the course will also be available in July for those unable to attend the May event.

In April 2023, an analysis of recyclables collected by the Streets Division revealed that approximately 18.6% of materials placed into green recycling carts were non-recyclable. Incorrect disposal not only increases costs but can also lead to equipment damage and potential hazards for sorting facility workers.

Recycling guidelines vary across states; Wisconsin has specific mandates that may not apply elsewhere. Therefore, following local rules is crucial for correct recycling practices at home. Community advocates play a vital role in disseminating accurate local information amidst a sea of competing data sources.

For those interested in learning about proper recycling without becoming a Certified Recycling Steward, City of Madison provides free resources including a comprehensive website and informational material available at local libraries.
