The South Madison Farmers' Market will reintroduce its food scraps recycling drop-off starting Tuesday, May 21, 2024. This service allows individuals to deposit certain types of food waste at a designated booth free of charge. The announcement marks the second of three farmers market drop-off locations planned for this year, with details about the third location to be released in due course.
The South Madison Farmers’ Market is situated at the intersection of South Park Street and West Wingra Drive, with the exact address being 1602 South Park St. The food scraps drop-off service will operate from 2:00pm until 6:00pm every Tuesday evening, commencing on May 21, 2024 and concluding on October 29, 2024.
The program accepts food waste suitable for backyard composting. Acceptable items include coffee grounds, egg shells, raw fruits and vegetables among other similar scraps. However, meat products, bones, compostable plastics, paper products, grease or dairy products (including cheese) are not accepted. Further information regarding acceptable and non-acceptable items can be found on the Streets Division’s Food Scraps website.
Staff from Sustain Dane will be present at the food scraps drop-off tent to provide guidance on what materials they can accept. For additional information about food waste prevention, food donation and food scraps recycling visit www.cityofmadison.com/FoodScraps.
