State Senator Robert Cowles | Wisconsin State Legislature

MADISON – Senator Robert Cowles delivered the weekly GOP radio address this week, outlining several legislative initiatives aimed at supporting the Wisconsin State Parks System ahead of Free Fun Weekend.

"Hello, I’m State Senator Rob Cowles, representing the 2nd Senate District in Northeast Wisconsin. Wisconsin is home to some of the most scenic state parks anywhere in the United States. From Devil’s Lake to Copper Falls and Wyalusing to Peninsula State Park, there’s a state park out there waiting for you, and the Legislature has been working to improve your experience," stated Cowles.

He emphasized the economic impact of state parks on local communities: "Our state parks have a tremendous economic impact, bringing a massive boost to our tourism industry that goes right back into our local communities."

Cowles highlighted Act 113, a new law passed during the recent Legislative Session. "Starting in 2025, an annual state parks pass will be valid for 12 months after you purchase it. Currently, parks passes expire on December 31st and cost the same regardless of the date of purchase. This change creates a better value for you and your family, giving you more chances to discover the wonders of Wisconsin’s state parks," he explained.

Further investments were noted: "The 2023 State Budget invested over $50 million in parks building projects and general operations and maintenance. This is on top of $15 million set aside to fund critical projects from a series of bills I authored with colleagues in previous Legislative Sessions."

Cowles concluded by encouraging residents to take advantage of Free Fun Weekend on June 1st and 2nd: "All of Wisconsin’s state parks are open to the public for no cost, and fishing licenses and trail passes will not be required as well. Get out there and explore Wisconsin this summer in our parks!"
