MADISON, Wis. – Local police officers and firefighters engaged with elementary school students this week to discuss their careers.
The Madison Police Department’s Black Officer Coalition (BOC) and Sable Flames within the Madison Fire Department hosted a special program at Glenn Stephens Elementary School on Wednesday.
Students toured squad cars and firetrucks and tried on the protective gear worn by each agency.
“I love that we get to interact with the kids. They get to learn about our jobs and see what they can do. It’s just a fun day,” said MPD Officer Candace Enis, a member of the BOC who currently serves in the Community Outreach and Resource Education unit.
Students asked officers questions about public safety, while officers discussed ways for students to serve their community.
“We want these kids to know we are here for them. We want them to feel comfortable connecting with us at any time,” said Officer Neal Crowder, president of the BOC.
This marked the third year of participation in this event by the Coalition.
