Madison has been ranked the second safest city for pedestrians among the largest 101 metropolitan areas in the United States, according to the Dangerous by Design 2024 report from Smart Growth America and the National Complete Streets Coalition.

“I am proud to say we are among the safest cities for pedestrians; however, we still have more work to do,” said Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway. “Our efforts to make Madison the safest city to walk, bike, and drive will not stop until we reach zero deaths on our city streets, so our team will continue to work hard to provide safe travel for all.”

The Dangerous by Design report evaluates pedestrian fatality statistics, where Madison stands out as a national leader. As the city continues to grow, officials recognize the need for ongoing and expanded efforts to enhance pedestrian safety. In response, Madison adopted Vision Zero in 2020 and has directed funding towards this goal through its Safe Streets Madison program. This initiative exemplifies how local authorities leverage state and federal funds to bolster their safety measures.

Additionally, Madison has approved a Complete and Green Streets Guide that incorporates considerations for all road users into roadway design processes, with a specific emphasis on pedestrian safety.

Further information about Madison's initiatives can be found in their 2024 Vision Zero Safe Streets and Speed Management Projects.
