Dane County's districts student body comprised mostly of white students in 2023-24 school year

The majority of students in Dane County districts were white in the 2023-24 school year, according to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

Of the 77,074 students attending Dane County district schools, 60.7% were white. Hispanic students were the second largest ethnic group among Dane County's districts, making up 15.4% of the student body.

In the previous school year, white students were also the most common group in Dane County districts, representing 61.7% of the student body.

Madison Metropolitan School District had the most even distribution of races among county districts, which included 39.3% of white students, 24.9% of Hispanic students, 18.4% of African American students, 9.6% of multiracial students, 7.5% of Asian students, and 0% of Pacific Islander students.

In the 2023-24 school year, the total number of students enrolled in school districts in the county increased 0.3% compared to the previous year.

The main offices of all districts mentioned in the story are located in cities associated with Dane County.

According to the Nation's Report Card 2022 results, Black fourth-graders in Wisconsin scored an average of 40 points lower than their white colleagues in both Math and Reading.

Data also showed that Black students were three times as likely to fail the Reading test than white pupils in the state. The gap is even larger in Mathematics, with Black students failing five times more than white students.
