Urban Forestry has commenced its fall planting season, which started on October 21, 2024. The initiative will see the planting of 855 trees across the City of Madison streets, comprising 25 different species. This selection aims to foster a diverse and resilient urban canopy.

Earlier this year, on May 21, a severe storm resulted in the loss of over 400 street-side trees in Madison. In response, Urban Forestry plans to replace 175 of these lost trees as part of the current planting effort. Additional replacements will be made in future replanting seasons as necessary.

The tree planting activities are scheduled to continue throughout the city until November. Once completed, Urban Forestry crews will shift their focus back to pruning and other tree care tasks during the winter months. Another round of tree planting is planned for spring 2025.

Residents are encouraged to follow new tree care guidelines available on the City of Madison Urban Forestry website. It is advised that newly planted trees be watered regularly until the ground freezes due to low rainfall this fall.

For further inquiries about Urban Forestry operations, residents can visit www.cityofmadison.com/Forestry or contact their office at 608-266-4816.
