Madison Fire Department's Community Education Officer, Bernadette Galvez, has been named Wisconsin’s "Public Educator of the Year" by the Wisconsin State Fire Inspectors Association. This annual award recognizes an outstanding public educator who excels in fire prevention.

Galvez has served with the Madison Fire Department for 34 years and became its Community Education Officer in 1994. Her extensive outreach includes work with local schools, workplaces, residential facilities, and community organizations.

Known for her ability to connect with children, Galvez visits elementary schools throughout Madison during October's Fire Prevention Month. These visits reach over 4,100 children and teachers annually, making it one of the most impactful educational programs.

“Bernadette brings an unmatched energy to work every day with the goal of having a positive influence on everyone she interacts with,” said Bill Sullivan, Fire Marshal for the City of Madison. “If you see her in action... you will see her compassion for people and devotion to safety education."

Each year, Galvez reaches approximately 45,000 individuals through various initiatives. She organizes Safety Saturday on Capitol Square alongside local organizations and contributes to events like CampHERO and UW-Madison Campus Fire Safety.

Fire Chief Chris Carbon praised her dedication: “Bernadette has been the heart and soul of our community education initiatives for more than three decades... She is simply one of the most generous and caring individuals that we have had the privilege to work with.”

In addition to her broader educational efforts, Galvez coordinates the Children and Fire Program at Madison Fire Department. This program involves meeting with children involved in fire-related incidents to discuss fire dangers in a holistic manner.

At an awards banquet held during the Wisconsin State Fire Inspectors Association conference on October 24, Galvez received a standing ovation for her contributions. Reflecting on her career, she remarked: “It's not work for me,” expressing gratitude towards her colleagues' support.
