The University of Wisconsin–Madison has reinforced its policies on nepotism and consensual relationships in the workplace. These guidelines are part of the university's commitment to maintaining a professional and respectful work environment.
The nepotism policy aims to prevent conflicts of interest or perceptions of favoritism by outlining expectations regarding employment and supervisory relationships among family members and close associates. It emphasizes avoiding participation in decisions related to hiring, managing, retaining, paying, promoting, supervising, or granting tenure to individuals with whom one has a familial or close personal relationship. In cases where such relationships exist, supervisors must notify deans or directors using a specific form. The Office of Human Resources will then assist in managing potential conflicts.
Similarly, the consensual relationships policy requires employees engaged in romantic or sexual relationships with colleagues to disclose these connections to their supervisor or department chair. This disclosure is intended to manage any possible conflicts of interest appropriately. Professional conduct is expected from all employees regardless of personal relationships, ensuring that behavior perceived as favoritism or bias is avoided. Confidentiality is maintained throughout the process.
Both policies are accessible online at policy.wisc.edu/library/UW-5046 for nepotism and policy.wisc.edu/library/UW-5048 for consensual relationships.
UW–Madison reiterates its dedication to fostering a fair and equitable workplace for everyone involved.
