Madison College is hosting the "SOULful Joy" art exhibit from February 2 to 28, showcasing artwork that emphasizes joy rooted in resilience and cultural expression. The event is organized by Madison College’s SOUL Affinity Group and the Division of College Culture and Climate.
The exhibit features the work of Deseré Mayo, known for her graphite drawings that highlight Black history and culture. Her piece titled “Soulful Joy” is a focal point of the exhibition. Bolanle Awosika's contributions also celebrate Black culture.
The show includes works from 14 artists, each offering perspectives on themes such as community and resilience. Notable artists include Brooklyn Doby, Alice Traore, Jaundy Brunswick, Sharon Bjyrd, Lilada Gee, Janee McCoy, Faleshuh Walker (Lashay The Artist), Dynae Saba, DarRen Morris, Dr. Crystasany R. Turner, Sabrina Madison, and Adwoa Asentu.
This free exhibit honors Dzigbodi Akyea, a former academic advisor at Madison College who passed away in 2021. The SOUL (Sisters of Unity and Leadership) Affinity Group aims to support Black women employees by fostering unity and leadership.
The opening ceremony will take place on February 6 with events scheduled from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., including opening remarks and a program session. The public is invited to attend both the ceremony and the exhibit at no cost.
The Gallery at Truax is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., located near the entrance of the Truax Building in Madison, Wisconsin.
