The City Clerk’s Office in Madison is emphasizing the availability of accessible voting options for the upcoming November 5 General Election. All polling places are required to be accessible, with poll workers using an accessibility checklist to address any barriers on election day.
For voters unable to enter polling locations due to health or mobility issues, curbside voting is available. Voters can inform poll workers of their need for this service or contact the Clerk’s Office at (608) 266-4601. Two poll workers will assist by bringing a ballot and necessary materials to the voter at the curb, ensuring that it is returned and counted properly.
Poll book accessibility has also been considered. Voters who cannot state their name and address may have someone do so on their behalf. Additionally, those unable to sign due to a disability are exempt from this requirement. Magnifying sheets, signature guides, and extra seating are provided at every polling place.
Every location is equipped with an ExpressVote ballot marking device. This tool allows voters to make selections via touchscreen or Braille keypad and offers features like large print, high contrast, headphones, and compatibility with sip & puff devices. Voters can verify their selections before printing their ballots and even recheck them using the machine.
Voters may also have someone assist them in marking their ballots as long as it is not an employer or labor union representative. The assistant does not need to be eligible to vote but must provide their name and address for documentation purposes.
The City Clerk’s Office aims "that each eligible voter will be able to cast a ballot and have that ballot counted."
