A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Town of Cottage Grove, Wisconsin, on November 7, 2024. The request was made by Madison Reporter, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
The request specifically sought records under the Wisconsin Open Records Law, §19.31 et seq., pertaining to new voter registrations that occurred on November 5, 2024. Madison Reporter requested these records preferably in an electronic format for ease of access and analysis.
As a media organization committed to transparency and public accountability, we at Madison Reporter believe that access to such public records is crucial for fulfilling our professional responsibilities. These include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.
In light of our role in gathering and disseminating information to the public, we also stated our belief that we are eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional. This waiver would allow us to access these important records without financial barriers potentially impeding our reporting efforts.
We await the response from the Town of Cottage Grove regarding this request and will continue striving for transparency and accountability in our reporting.
