After months of negotiations, the City of Madison and Maurer’s Market have finalized a lease agreement. This arrangement ensures that residents of South Madison will continue to have access to a full-service grocery store in their area.

The agreement has been in development for several years. The initial grocer informed the city in September 2021 that they could not proceed, prompting the search for a replacement.

Maurer’s Market agreed to become the tenant for the 24,000-square-foot city-owned first-floor grocery condo at 815 Cedar Street in May 2023. The lease was signed on November 18, 2024, after necessary building improvements were approved and funded by the Common Council.

City staff worked extensively over several years to maintain grocery access for South Madison community members without requiring them to travel long distances.
