At least three individuals lost their lives in a shooting incident at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison on Monday morning. The tragic event also left several others injured and occurred two days and 12 years after the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy.
Senator Kelda Roys, representing the district where the school is located, expressed her condolences and concern over the incident. "At least three Madisonians lost their lives today in a school shooting. My heart goes out to the children, staff, and families affected, all of whom are victims of this unthinkable tragedy," she stated. She highlighted the broader issue of gun violence affecting communities across the nation.
Senator Roys emphasized the moral obligation to address gun violence in society. "Right now, it’s hard to think of a greater moral failing as a nation and society than our inaction and unwillingness to keep our children safe from gun violence," she said. She pointed out that firearms are currently the leading cause of death among American children, describing this as a policy choice.
She urged for legislative action to implement reasonable gun safety measures aimed at reducing firearm-related injuries and deaths. "The frequency of these tragedies has perversely numbed too many into thinking that nothing can change," she remarked. Senator Roys called for unity in passing legislation that prioritizes children's safety over unrestricted access to firearms.
"In the name of John Klang, Jonathan Brostoff, the victims of today’s shooting, and all those whose lives or loved ones have been lost to gun violence, we must choose to love our children more than we value unfettered access to guns," she concluded.
