The City of Madison Building Inspection Division is reminding residents about the city's ordinances regarding sidewalk shoveling and salt usage, as snow is expected in the forecast. The division handles complaints related to unshoveled sidewalks and excessive salt use.

Property owners with walkways adjacent to their properties are responsible for clearing snow and ice promptly. Generally, sidewalks must be cleared by noon the day after snowfall ends, unless otherwise announced. Residents can stay informed by subscribing to the City of Madison’s Sidewalk Snow Removal Updates email list.

Renters should check their leases to determine who is responsible for shoveling. Extensions may be granted to older adults and people with disabilities living in owner-occupied single-family homes if additional time is needed.

City ordinances require that all snow and ice be removed from walkways along a property, including the full width of sidewalks and curb ramps leading to crosswalks. Property owners should ensure curb ramps remain clear even after plows have passed, as plows are required to push snow up to the curb.

Failure to clear public sidewalks on time can result in citations and fines. The Building Inspection Division does not issue warnings before citing individuals for non-compliance due to safety and accessibility concerns. A first offense incurs a fine of $124, while subsequent offenses carry fines of $187 after adding state-required assessments and fees.
