Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway has announced that Chief Shon Barnes will be leaving his position for a new opportunity in Seattle. In her statement, the mayor expressed gratitude for Chief Barnes' service to Madison, noting his leadership and impact on the community.

"The tragedy this week has been all-consuming, and we still have much healing to do as a community," said Rhodes-Conway. She praised the Madison Police Department's response to the crisis, highlighting Chief Barnes' role in coordinating with various law enforcement agencies during this challenging time.

The mayor also commended Chief Barnes for his collaboration with local organizations and departments, such as the Public Health Violence Prevention Unit and the Madison Fire Department's CARES program. His efforts have contributed to a safer and more resilient city through a holistic approach to public safety.

As Chief Barnes departs, the Madison Police and Fire Commission will be responsible for selecting his successor. An interim chief is expected to be appointed while the search process is underway. The transition aims to maintain continuity in police operations.

Rhodes-Conway concluded her statement by expressing appreciation for Chief Barnes' contributions and wishing him well in Seattle: "On behalf of the City of Madison, I want to offer my deepest appreciation to Chief Barnes. We wish you the best of luck in the Emerald City, and you will always be welcome in Madison."
