The Madison Fire Department has announced the closure of Fire Station 6 at 825 W. Badger Road, effective Thursday, January 9, to facilitate redevelopment in the area. Emergency response teams previously stationed there will move to a temporary facility located at 2120 Fish Hatchery Road. This location was once the Town of Madison fire station and remains within Station 6's original response zone. The department anticipates remaining at this site until late 2026 or early 2027 while the Park Badger redevelopment project progresses.
The department assures that "emergency response capabilities to Fire Station 6's territory will not be disrupted or adversely impacted during the relocation." At the temporary site on Fish Hatchery Road, both an engine company and an ambulance will be stationed. Meanwhile, the ladder truck from West Badger Road will temporarily operate out of Fire Station 14 on Dairy Drive. Staffing levels and firefighter numbers at both locations are expected to remain consistent.
Madison Fire Department expresses enthusiasm about being involved in the community-focused redevelopment project situated at South Park Street and West Badger Road. Upon completion, a new Fire Station 6 is planned to integrate into a multi-use property, enhancing its role within the community it serves.
The new facilities promise better living conditions for firefighters who work in shifts lasting up to 24 hours. These improvements focus on health and wellness with designs accommodating city growth needs. The expanded space aims to boost community interaction opportunities and provide room for programs like CARES. Developers are also considering energy-efficient features such as geothermal heating and cooling alongside renewable energy systems; achieving at least a LEED V4 Silver rating is anticipated.
Currently in its design phase, this project will feature public engagement through meetings where design concepts will be presented for community feedback. A third meeting is scheduled for spring, although specific dates have yet to be confirmed. Information regarding these meetings can be found via updates from the City of Madison Department of Planning, Community and Economic Development.
Meanwhile, plans for repurposing the old Fire Station 6 include transforming it into a childcare facility linked with Madison College's Goodman South Campus expansion.
