Madison Public Library is commemorating 150 years of service with a series of events and activities in 2025, emphasizing the library's role as a vital part of the Madison community. The theme for this milestone is "Celebrating the Past, Inspiring the Future," as explained by Library Director Tana Elias.

"Madison Free Library – as we were known in 1875 – has a rich history of community support. We’ve been present through key moments and transitions in our community and nation’s history, including two world wars, the Civil Rights Movement, and the invention of the internet,” said Elias. “We’ve enjoyed the support of the Madison community, and this celebration is a community thank you and an open invitation. We’re excited to invite people to discover the library for the first time, welcome back those who haven’t visited in a while, and revel in this special moment with library lovers across the city all year long."

As part of its future plans, Madison Public Library will add a tenth location with construction set to begin on the Imagination Center at Reindahl Park this spring. This new center is scheduled to open in fall 2026. Conor Moran from Madison Public Library Foundation highlighted its significance: "Madison is a growing city, and the northeast side is one of the fastest-growing areas of the city,” said Moran. “Madison Public Library has always been responsive to the needs of the community."

Reflecting on its legacy, Mayor Satya Rhodes Conway noted: “At the opening ceremony of the very first Madison Public Library, Mayor Silas Pinney said its purpose was to ‘confer its blessings on all alike.’ Those blessings have expanded greatly in 150 years." She emphasized that libraries remain free and accessible to everyone.

The library invites residents to engage through various initiatives like checking out 150 items for a commemorative gift or taking selfies at Central Library's book arch. Pop-up historical timelines will be available across nine libraries linking visitors to more detailed online histories.

Outreach events throughout Madison will offer opportunities for residents to sign up for library cards or newsletters while sharing personal stories about their experiences with libraries.

Special anniversary celebrations are planned at each library location throughout May, marking when Madison Public Library was originally established.
