The City of Madison is recognizing its 63 crossing guards during the Adult School Crossing Guard Recognition Week, as declared by Wisconsin’s Department of Public Instruction for February 17-21. These individuals are acknowledged for their dedication to ensuring the safety of children and families at school intersections, often facing harsh winter conditions.
Alex Stewart, City of Madison Crossing Guard Supervisor, stated, “Every day, our crossing guards brave the elements to ensure our children have safe routes to school. Their commitment to safety, even in the toughest winter conditions, is truly commendable. This week is our chance, and the community’s chance, to express our appreciation of them.”
Residents are encouraged to show appreciation through simple gestures like a wave or a thank you. However, adhering to safe driving practices near school zones is emphasized as the most significant form of recognition. Drivers should reduce speed and exercise caution in these areas, especially during winter. They must also stop when a crossing guard raises their sign until everyone has safely crossed.
The City underscores that all road users—drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists—have a role in maintaining street safety by heeding crossing guards' instructions.
Throughout the week, stories about these vital community members will be shared on the City of Madison Traffic and Parking Facebook page. This initiative aims to highlight their motivations and contributions.
For those interested in learning more about the program or becoming a crossing guard themselves, information is available on the City's Crossing Guard Webpage.
