Artist Austen Brantley is in the process of creating a new sculpture for the City of Madison. The piece, currently being developed in his Detroit studio, highlights the bond between mother and child.

Brantley has shared images of a clay model of the sculpture. In his artist statement, he elaborates on the themes embedded within his work: “Embedded within the contours are narratives of struggle, perseverance, and triumph, reflecting the daily realities faced by individuals within marginalized communities.” He further explains that through this sculpture, he seeks to invite viewers to consider "the complexities of cultural identity, the enduring legacy of historical narratives, and the resilience of communities facing socioeconomic challenges." His goal is to bridge past and present to foster understanding across different human experiences.

The final sculpture will measure approximately 40 inches high by 36 inches wide by 24 inches deep. It is set to be installed this summer along East Washington Avenue near Darbo Drive. Brantley plans to continue documenting his progress as he works on "Mother and Child" for Madison's Darbo-Worthington neighborhood.
