Recently retired Dane County Executive Joe Parisi, a graduate of Madison College, shared insights into his educational journey and future plans. Parisi's path was unconventional; he dropped out of high school at 17 but later obtained a GED and attended Madison College, then known as MATC. He credits the college with helping build his confidence through supportive teachers who encouraged him to succeed.
Parisi eventually transferred to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, earning a degree in sociology at age 30. Reflecting on his career preparation, he stated that Madison College made higher education approachable and laid the foundation for his academic success.
During his tenure as county executive, Parisi was proud to work with a talented team on initiatives like mental health services for youth during the pandemic and environmental protection efforts in Dane County. He emphasized the importance of collaboration and creating an environment where others could thrive.
Parisi advises high school students considering Madison College to explore it as an option without feeling pressured to have their futures fully mapped out. He encourages students facing challenges to seek support from advisors and not be intimidated by others' perceived successes.
On personal skills, Parisi highlighted recognizing when he needs help and finding skilled individuals to collaborate with. Despite retiring from public service, he remains engaged in drumming with friends and plans to teach a class on local government and the environment at UW-Madison’s Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies.
He expressed excitement about teaching, noting that interacting with young people is uplifting and fulfilling for him.
