Large sheets displaying CO2 emission data are now hanging from the windows of Madison Public Library's Central Library as part of a new art installation titled "Wake Up!" by TetraPAKMAN, the Bubbler Artist-in-Residence. The installation began on March 15 and will continue until April 22, coinciding with Earth Day.
The project involves large-scale artworks installed on the first and second-floor windows facing Fairchild, Henry, and Mifflin Streets. An explainer sheet is available in the Bubbler Room to help visitors understand the data depicted. "Wake Up!" is a community-generated initiative focusing on climate change issues.
TetraPAKMAN aims to merge social commentary with carbon emissions data to inspire collective action. The project uses monthly data from The Keeling Curve, maintained by Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. Community members have been invited to paint CO2 emissions data onto repurposed bed sheets during TetraPAKMAN's residency.
“For me it was important to bring back this project when I was selected to be an Artist-in-Residence," said TetraPAKMAN. He expressed gratitude for the library's support: “I admire the Madison Public Library for being bold in their commitments and programs."
Since beginning his work with CO2 emission data in 2015, TetraPAKMAN has displayed previous iterations of "Wake Up!" at various locations including Madison Capitol lawn and UW–Madison School of Education Gallery.
During his residency at Central Library, he collaborated with the public over seven months to create additional pieces while discussing topics like personal responsibility and privilege related to climate action. Carlee Latimer, Bubbler Program Administrator, highlighted the importance of fostering dialogue around environmental issues: “TetraPAKMAN encourages intergenerational, hands-on collaboration."
The Friends of Madison Public Library made TetraPAKMAN’s residency possible.
