Megan Sipiorski, a teacher at Middleton High School, has been named the 2025 Wisconsin High School Social Studies Teacher of the Year by the Wisconsin Council for the Social Studies (WCSS). This recognition acknowledges her innovative contributions to social studies education, particularly her use of simulation-based experiential learning in the Legislative Semester program. This program allows students to gain firsthand experience of the legislative process and understand the role of citizens in shaping public policy.
Ms. Sipiorski also serves as the advisor for Middleton High School’s Model United Nations club. She has been recognized for creating a classroom environment that encourages civil discourse. "Megan’s passion for education and dedication to her students is inspiring," said Middleton High School Principal Peg Shoemaker. "I’m thrilled she has earned this prestigious recognition to highlight the impact she’s making at Middleton High School."
WCSS President Sarah Kopplin highlighted Ms. Sipiorski's ability to promote dialogue among students. "What sets Ms. Sipiorski apart is her ability to create an environment where civil discourse flourishes. She teaches her students not only the importance of disagreement in democracy, but also the tools to navigate these disagreements with respect and understanding," she said.
The award is an annual honor given to full-time high school social studies educators who demonstrate classroom excellence. It acknowledges teachers who encourage inquiry, inspire student engagement, and strive to improve their skills in social studies instruction.
The Wisconsin Council for the Social Studies is committed to enhancing social studies education at the K-12 level by offering resources, networking opportunities, and recognitions like the Teacher of the Year award.
