Sean Eiles and his husband, Steve, decided to grow their family through adoption shortly after marrying in 2019. In November 2023, they were chosen by a birth mother in Michigan, and their daughter, Ellie, was born five weeks early. Ellie required additional medical care before leaving the hospital.
The family soon discovered Ellie had biliary atresia, a serious liver disease causing blocked bile ducts. Dr. Katryn Furuya, a pediatric liver transplant program director at UW Health, confirmed the diagnosis. At four months old, Ellie underwent surgery, but a liver transplant became necessary.
“We signed documents to get Ellie listed for a donor liver, and one of those documents had to do with living liver donation,” Sean said. Not knowing about living donation for livers, both he and Steve, along with family members, underwent testing. Despite initial doubts due to his height, Sean was a match.
On August 15, 2024, Sean and Ellie had their surgeries. Dr. David Al-Adra led the team removing part of Sean’s liver, while Dr. Kelly Collins handled Ellie’s transplant. “The family was incredibly dedicated, always keeping their daughter’s health at the forefront,” Al-Adra shared.
Ellie faced post-surgery challenges, including blood tests indicating acute rejection. Furuya explained this is common within the first three months post-transplant. Following treatment, Ellie was discharged in early October.
The family is now transitioning back into normal life. Sean appreciated how Ellie maintained her happiness, saying, “After all she’s been through, I’m amazed she’s able to put on a smile and be happy.”
