Sauk Trail Elementary School recently welcomed Wisconsin Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski, who presented a check for $571,237 from the Common School Fund to the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District (MCPASD). The fund, which supports over 90% of public school libraries in Wisconsin, aims to enrich student learning and literacy.

The ceremony took place in the school's library and highlighted the importance of the Common School Fund as a critical resource. "When students have access to well-resourced libraries, they are empowered to explore, create, and grow," said Godlewski. "Through the Common School Fund, we’re making a real difference in classrooms and helping ease the burden on local taxpayers."

The event also included State Representative Alex Joers, Middleton Mayor Emily Kuhn, MCPASD Superintendent Dr. Dana Monogue, and Library Media Specialist Betsy Wermuth. In celebration of National Library Week, Godlewski read the book "Grace for President" to students, followed by a voting activity that engaged the children with themes of civic responsibility.

The Common School Fund, managed by the Board of Commissioners of Public Lands (BCPL), will distribute a record-breaking $70 million to public school libraries in Wisconsin this year. The board is chaired by Godlewski, with State Treasurer John Leiber and Attorney General Josh Kaul also serving.

MCPASD expressed gratitude to Library Media Specialist Betsy Wermuth for her efforts in organizing the event. Wermuth was recognized for her dedication to fostering an environment of creativity, digital literacy, and a love of reading at Sauk Trail Elementary.

The BCPL manages over $1.5 billion in state trust funds, with the annual distributions aiding schools in acquiring books and technology. This financial support aims to sustain inclusive and engaging learning spaces for Wisconsin's students.
