The University of Wisconsin–Madison has reported that the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) records for several international students have been terminated by the U.S. government. As of April 7, the terminations impact six current students and seven alumni on employment extensions.
A termination of status typically necessitates that an affected individual leave the United States immediately. However, the university emphasized it had no involvement in the termination of these records.
Despite terminations being a common occurrence for various reasons, there has been an increase in both the volume and frequency of terminations over the past week across UW–Madison and other institutions.
UW-Madison officials have stated there is no known federal law enforcement activity on campus related to these terminations, and they do not appear to be associated with participation in free speech or political events. The exact reasons behind the terminations remain unclear.
International Student Services has reached out to those whose status has been terminated, providing advisement on potential consequences and offering information on legal resources upon request.
The university assures its commitment to understanding the reasons for the terminations and to maintain communication with the affected students as well as the broader UW–Madison international community.
UW–Madison values the presence of international students, faculty, and staff as integral members of its community. For further information on federal actions, the university encourages visiting its Federal Relations website and International Student Services page.
