University of Wisconsin–Madison's graduate programs have been acknowledged as among the best in the country in a new report by U.S. News & World Report's "Best Graduate Schools" for 2025.
A standout is the School of Education, which has maintained its position as the top-ranking program for the second consecutive year. The school also earned first-place rankings in specialties such as curriculum, instruction, educational psychology, and rehabilitation counseling.
“Our graduate programs provide a world-class education and research leadership across the entire academic spectrum,” commented Charles Lee Isbell Jr., provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. He emphasized the programs' role in preparing students for success.
Dean of the Graduate School, William J. Karpus, noted, “Our array of high-quality graduate programs prepares students as thought leaders and innovators who excel at UW–Madison and in their future careers.”
Marcelle Haddix, the dean of the School of Education, sees the No. 1 ranking as a testament to the school's broad spectrum of respected programs and the impactful work undertaken by their faculty, staff, students, and alumni. She stated, “Although these rankings are just one measure of our school, they affirm our commitment to being a national leader in addressing the top issues facing the field of education and beyond.”
Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin views the recognition as reinforcing UW–Madison’s reputation for excellence in educational scholarship. “And while I’m proud of the ranking, I am even prouder of the enduring partnership among our School of Education faculty, staff, students, alumni and leaders who share a commitment to excellence and innovation,” she said.
UW–Madison's strong showings across various fields continue to demonstrate the institution's broad academic prowess. Rankings spanned a diverse range of programs from nuclear engineering to veterinary medicine, with several top five and top ten finishes in specific disciplines.
The detailed rankings showcased the strength of specialties in many departments, reinforcing the university's comprehensive academic offerings. Despite not all programs receiving annual rankings, those recognized reflect significant standing in their fields.
