Madison College's District Board of Trustees has announced the selection of Dr. Jennifer Berne as the institution's incoming president. Dr. Berne's appointment follows an extensive nationwide search and will take effect on July 1.

Dr. Berne joins Madison College with over 30 years of experience in higher education, having spent her career as a faculty member, researcher, academic leader, and community college provost. She is currently serving as the provost at Oakland Community College in Michigan.

The announcement marks the end of a prominent chapter for Madison College, as Dr. Jack E. Daniels III retired in January 2025 after an eleven-year leadership tenure. Dr. Berne's current role involves overseeing a multi-campus institution catering to more than 23,000 students, where she has been instrumental in developing new programs, expanding dual credit and workforce partnerships, and enhancing teaching and learning initiatives.

Dr. Berne was one of four finalists in the search process. Speaking on her selection, Board Chair Donald D. Dantzler, Jr. expressed confidence in her capabilities: “The board has selected a leader who understands Madison College's impressive history and shares our bold vision for its future. We are deeply impressed by Dr. Berne's unwavering commitment to student success, teaching and learning, and readiness to continue advancing the college's strategic goals. She possesses the experience and passion necessary to tackle the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead."

Dr. Berne has a robust academic background, having authored several publications on writing instruction, literacy, and faculty development. She is also recognized as an Aspen Presidential Fellow, indicative of her leadership potential in driving equitable outcomes at community colleges.

Board Vice-Chair Shiva Bidar-Sielaff added, “Madison College is a sought-after partner and leader, and we believe Dr. Berne’s experience and proven ability to bring people together to find solutions ensure that Madison College will continue to be a driving force in community and workforce development.”

Dr. Berne holds multiple degrees, including a doctorate from Michigan State University and a master's from Northeastern University. She is set to complete an MBA from the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business soon.

Dr. Berne voiced her enthusiasm for the role: “Madison College is poised for transformative success, and I am honored to be part of it. I was immediately impressed by the dedicated faculty and staff I’ve met, the engaged partners throughout the community, the beautiful spaces and facilities, and the incredible backdrop of the district Madison College serves. What stood out to me was the deep pride people feel for this college and the meaningful purpose behind everything happening here."

The board also acknowledged Dr. Tim Casper for his interim leadership since January 2025. Dantzler noted, “Dr. Casper’s steady leadership over the past several months has been pivotal. He navigated the college through important issues impacting our students and ensured key initiatives moved forward." Dr. Casper is expected to resume his role as executive vice president for student affairs post-July 1.

Dantzler concluded by thanking everyone involved in the search process, including search committee members, faculty, staff, and community members for their engagement and feedback.
