As of late April, the University of Wisconsin-Madison confirmed that all 27 of its international students and alumni affected by the terminations of their SEVIS records have had their statuses restored. This development allows these students and alumni to proceed with their academic and post-graduation activities at the institution.
"This situation was deeply troubling, upended lives, and created both fear and harm," stated Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin. "I want to personally thank the many members of our community, along with local, state and federal officials, who worked to assist our students."
Notifications regarding the status change have been sent to the students. The university's International Student Services and International Faculty and Staff Services remain active in providing ongoing support and resources.
Frances Vavrus, vice provost and dean of the International Division at UW–Madison, commented on the situation: "We are pleased to see that all of our affected students and alumni have had their SEVIS records returned to active status, as it has been a difficult period for all involved. We will continue to follow this evolving situation closely throughout the summer and upcoming academic year."
Thousands of SEVIS records were terminated in recent weeks at UW–Madison and other institutions. Reversals began appearing last Thursday and progressed over the weekend. The university and students received no explanation for either the terminations or the reversal process, although successful restraining orders were obtained against the initial changes.
