The City of Madison has announced that its secure ballot drop box at Fire Station 1, located at 316 W. Dayton St., is now available for use in the upcoming June 17 Special Election. This drop box offers a safe method for absentee voters to return their ballots to the Clerk’s Office.

Voters who have requested an absentee ballot for this election should expect it to arrive in their mailbox shortly. Instructions included with the ballot will guide voters on how to ensure their vote is counted.

After marking their choices and sealing the ballot in the provided certificate envelope, voters can deposit it in the secure drop box at Fire Station 1. It is important that the certificate includes all necessary information: voter signature, witness signature, witness name, and witness address.

The Clerk’s Office follows a strict procedure for collecting ballots from the drop box. "Two sworn election officials retrieve the ballots from their assigned location," ensuring security throughout the process. These officials place the ballots into a ballot bag secured with a tamper-evident seal featuring a unique serial number, which is documented on a chain of custody form.

Once collected from various locations, these teams promptly deliver all retrieved ballots to the Clerk’s Office.
