The University of Wisconsin–Madison issued a statement today concerning the budget agreement approved by the Joint Finance Committee. The agreement involves operating and capital budgets for the Universities of Wisconsin, including UW–Madison. This development is a significant step towards finalizing the state budget process.

The university acknowledged the state's various funding priorities and expressed gratitude to Governor Evers and legislative leaders for recognizing its role as a $30 billion economic engine. They appreciated the bipartisan investment of additional state resources amid uncertainties related to federal budget cuts.

The Joint Committee on Finance authorized a budget bill that allows key projects to progress, such as dining halls in Chadbourne and DeJope, and critical renovations of historic Science Hall. However, there was disappointment over the lack of funding approval for a new residence hall.

Additionally, planning funds were approved for demolishing and relocating the Humanities Building, which requires more than $70 million in maintenance. A compensation increase of 3% and 2% for all state employees, including those at UW–Madison, was also included.

Changes include new instructor workload requirements, rules around credit transfers between Universities of Wisconsin institutions, and an extension on position limits.

UW–Madison emphasized its role in strengthening Wisconsin's economy through education, research, service, and outreach under the guiding mission known as the Wisconsin Idea.
