When Rodrigo Carapia was invited to be the keynote speaker at the Madison College High School Completion Program graduation ceremony, he initially hesitated. Despite his eagerness to motivate others, he doubted his English proficiency for public speaking. However, his perspective changed after some reflection. "I thought, why not? It's important to take on challenges, even when you think you're not ready," he said during the ceremony.
Madison College's School of Academic Advancement offers adults the opportunity to earn a high school credential through national General Education Development (GED) exams or a High School Equivalency Diploma program (HSED). The June ceremony celebrated 383 graduates who overcame various obstacles to complete their education.
Rodrigo Carapia, originally from Mexico and now a successful artist with murals in Madison and Mexico, graduated with the highest academic score in the HEP program. He encouraged graduates by saying, "Remember, your community believes in you, your family believes in you, but most importantly, you have to believe in yourself."
The High School Equivalency Program (HEP) at Madison College is designed for migrant and seasonal field workers and their families. As graduates received their diplomas, they were reminded that there is no expiration date on earning a high school diploma.
Among those celebrating was Murla Chappell, who completed her diploma at age 60 after battling cancer. She plans to transition to college soon. Sedenia Furlow also earned her diploma at 65 to inspire her children and grandchildren, emphasizing that it's never too late to learn.
