Dr. Jennifer Berne has assumed the role of president at Madison College, a position she began this month. She aims to enhance student success and foster strong community partnerships in her leadership of the seven-campus college, which serves students across a 12-county district.
Expressing gratitude for the opportunity, Dr. Berne stated, “I appreciate that the Madison College community has put their faith in me to lead.” She emphasized the college's role in transforming students' lives through education and acknowledged the dedication of employees and partners.
In her initial weeks as president, Dr. Berne plans to engage with faculty, staff, and students while meeting with workforce, community, K-12, and higher education partners throughout the district.
“We all have a vested interest in what makes Madison College a force for good in our district and the state of Wisconsin,” Dr. Berne said. Her career spans over 30 years in higher education roles from faculty member to researcher to instructional leader. Previously, she was provost at Oakland Community College in Michigan.
Dr. Berne's contributions include developing new programs, expanding dual credit options, leading teaching initiatives, and boosting student enrollment. As a community leader, she collaborates with K-12 partners and industry leaders to enhance access and create talent pipelines.
Reflecting on her career path, Dr. Berne remarked: “I’ve held many roles in higher education, and each one has prepared me to serve here now.”
The Madison College Board of Trustees selected Dr. Berne following a nationwide search. Board Chair Donald D. Dantzler Jr., welcomed her warmly: “Dr. Berne arrives with an impressive history of putting student success front and center.”
She succeeds Jack E. Daniels III who retired after 11 years as president earlier this year; Dr. Tim Casper served as interim president since then.
Dr. Berne holds a doctorate from Michigan State University along with degrees from Northeastern University and the University of Michigan where she also completed an MBA at Ross School of Business.
“What students gain from their time at Madison College is not just a degree or credential but a lifelong commitment to growth and change," she concluded.
