The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) library team has released a list of recommended books in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. The selection includes titles for students at all reading levels, aiming to highlight Hispanic and Latino voices and stories.
For elementary students, the list features picture books such as "Green is a chile pepper: A book of colors" by Roseanne Thong, "Mango, Abuela, and Me" by Meg Medina, and "My Name is Celia: The life of Celia Cruz = Me llamo Celia: la vida de Celia Cruz" by Monica Brown. Other notable works include "Planting Stories: The Life of Librarian and Storyteller Pura Belpré" by Anika Aldamuy Denise and "When Angels Sing: The Story of Rock Legend Carlos Santana" by Michael Mahin.
Elementary chapter books and graphic novels on the list include "Lola Levine is not mean!" by Monica Brown, "Merci Suárez Changes Gears" by Meg Medina, and "Sal & Gabi Break the Universe" by Carlos Hernandez.
Middle school recommendations feature titles such as "Lucky Broken Girl" by Ruth Behar, "The Last Cuentista" by Donna Barba Higuera, and "They Call Me Güero: A Border Kid’s Poems" by David Bowles.
High school students are encouraged to read works like "The Poet X" by Elizabeth Acevedo, "In the Time of the Butterflies" by Julia Alvarez, and "I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter" by Erika L. Sánchez.
Non-fiction selections include "Somos Latinas: Voices of Wisconsin Latina Activists" by Andrea Teresa Erenas & Eloisa Gómez and "Inventing Latinos: A New Story of American Racism" by Laura E. Gómez.
