With the Labor Day weekend approaching, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is urging residents and visitors to prioritize safety while enjoying the state’s lakes and rivers. The department reports that 12 boating fatalities have occurred in Wisconsin so far in 2025, with many of those deaths involving individuals who were not wearing life jackets.

“Labor Day weekend is a time to relax and enjoy Wisconsin’s natural beauty,” said Major April Dombrowski, Wisconsin DNR recreational safety and outdoor skills bureau director. “But with crowded waterways, it’s critical that everyone stays alert, wears a life jacket and makes smart decisions to keep themselves and others safe.”

The DNR has outlined several recommendations for boaters as they prepare for one of the busiest weekends on the water. The agency emphasizes that wearing a life jacket remains the most effective measure to prevent drowning. According to officials, drownings can occur quickly and quietly, even among strong swimmers. Wearing a life jacket provides extra time in an emergency situation.

Other key safety tips include staying sober while operating any type of vessel. Alcohol use continues to be a leading factor in boating incidents across the state. Boaters are advised to always designate a sober operator before heading out.

Maintaining a safe speed is also important, particularly in congested areas or near shorelines where there may be smaller vessels present. Reducing speed can help prevent accidents such as capsizing or swamping.

Visibility is another focus for safety this holiday weekend. The DNR recommends testing navigation lights before departure and carrying extra batteries on board. Wearing bright clothing or using reflective gear can also increase visibility, especially for operators of low-profile crafts like kayaks or canoes.

Boaters are reminded to know their limits by considering weather conditions, water currents, and their own physical abilities before setting out on the water. Removing distractions such as mobile devices or loud music can help operators remain focused and aware of their surroundings.

Communicating plans with someone onshore—such as providing details about your route and expected return time—is encouraged, particularly for those boating alone. Additionally, sharing waterways courteously by giving space to all types of vessels helps ensure everyone’s safety.

The DNR stresses that responsible decision-making is just as crucial as having proper equipment when it comes to preventing incidents on the water. Choices like refraining from boating under the influence, checking weather forecasts ahead of time, minimizing distractions, and avoiding overcrowded areas contribute significantly to safer experiences for all users of Wisconsin’s waters.
