The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has released the fall issue of its quarterly publication, Wisconsin Natural Resources magazine. The latest edition is now available both in print and online, offering a range of articles designed to inform and engage readers about the state's natural resources and outdoor activities.

A central feature of this issue is an in-depth cover story on wild rice, known as “manoomin” in the Anishinaabe language. The article explores the significance of wild rice as a cultural resource and addresses the challenges it faces from climate change and other threats. The piece highlights ongoing research projects aimed at supporting and preserving this important but vulnerable plant.

In addition to the cover story, the fall issue marks further coverage of the 125th anniversary of the Wisconsin State Park System. Readers will find information about hunting-free state parks, opportunities for biking on state trails, and details about parks celebrating anniversaries this year.

The magazine also examines everyday uses for products made from Wisconsin forests. There are updates on DNR-supported brownfield redevelopment projects that transform previously blighted areas into productive spaces.

Another featured program comes from Milwaukee Water Commons, which offers educational experiences through its Water School initiative. This program aims to reconnect people with water resources in their communities.

For those interested in fishing, there are tips on how to catch trophy fish such as musky or walleye during the season. The magazine includes insights into waterfowl tracking efforts that help support local bird populations.

Conservation remains a focus throughout this issue. Articles detail how sales of fish and wildlife stamps contribute to conservation funding across Wisconsin. There is also coverage of DNR outdoor skills trainers who play a key role in safety education for hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts.

Wildlife topics include an overview of porcupines living in northern forests and suggestions for helping pollinators when performing fall yard cleanup tasks. Information is provided about ways to donate to Cherish Wisconsin Outdoors Funds, which supports public lands across the state.

This fall’s edition commemorates significant milestones such as the 50th anniversary of the Edmund Fitzgerald shipwreck on Lake Superior—a historic event with lasting impact—and shares results from recent studies including the Southwest Wisconsin CWD (chronic wasting disease), Deer, and Predator Study.

For younger readers, Kids Corner explains why spiders tend to be more active during autumn months. There is also a feature highlighting the scenic beauty found at Turtle-Flambeau Scenic Waters Area.

The digital version of Wisconsin Natural Resources magazine can be accessed at wnrmag.com. Annual subscriptions for four quarterly print issues are available for $8.97 per year by calling 1-800-678-9472 or visiting their website for subscription options or gift purchases.
