Insistent Presence: Contemporary African Art from the Chazen Collection will be exhibited at the Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, from September 13 to December 14, 2025. This exhibition is one of two that the Chazen Museum of Art will send on tour during the 2025–2026 period.
The show features contemporary African art drawn from the Chazen’s collection. Artists represented include Leilah Babirye, whose ceramic sculpture Namuleme from the Kuchu Mbogo (Buffalo) Clan is included in the display, and Immy Mali, whose work Virtually Mine is also featured. The exhibition also includes Barthélémy Toguo’s piece Exodus.
Katherine Alcauskas, chief curator of the Chazen Museum of Art, and Margaret Nagawa, guest curator and PhD candidate at Emory University, are leading this project. Photographs by Cameron Baskin provided by the Michael C. Carlos Museum document visitors engaging with works such as Virtually Mine by Immy Mali.
The collaboration between the Chazen Museum of Art and Emory University allows for a broader audience to experience contemporary African art from a major university collection.
