Participants in UW–Madison’s first-ever Earth Fest Kickoff Celebration on Friday, April 19, lauded the institution's sustainability and environmental efforts. Chancellor Jennifer L. Mnookin unveiled the RISE-EARTH initiative, which funds expanded environmental research, while business and government officials explored new opportunities arising from sustainable approaches. Students, faculty, and staff expressed their enthusiasm for the progress being made.

"Our goal is to unite UW–Madison communities of all kinds — external to the university, internal to the university, students, faculty, staff, people who work the night shift, people who keep the land, all of us — together, to celebrate all things environmental and sustainability," stated Paul Robbins, dean of the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies.

Missy Nergard, UW’s director of sustainability, emphasized the importance of looking at the whole system of sustainability efforts at UW–Madison, highlighting the significance of interdisciplinary opportunities. Ann Terlaak, a business professor and faculty advisor for the Sustainability Certificate, commended the leadership of students in driving sustainability efforts.

Former student and sustainability intern Katie Piel expressed her pride in the university's continued momentum towards sustainability, stating, "It makes me so proud to be a Badger." Jacob Breit, chair of the ASM Sustainability Committee, welcomed the Environmental Sustainability Goals announced by the chancellor in February, noting the increased institutional support and credibility they provide to student initiatives.

UW graduate student Marek Makowski urged celebration of the hard work and dedication that led to the establishment of these goals, while Ian Aley, Green Fund program manager, described the moment as a significant step towards a more beautiful world.

The Earth Fest events, which include lectures, excursions, projects, and panels, aim to educate, inspire, and motivate individuals to take action in the realm of sustainability. The activities, organized in collaboration with numerous student organizations and campus units, underscore UW–Madison's commitment to environmental stewardship and progress in sustainability efforts.
