Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District issued the following announcement on May 24.
The MHS team of seniors Trevor Chau, Jonah Guse and David Jiang and juniors Hansen Jin and Sanjay Suresh finished in 18th place at the National Science Bowl Tournament hosted virtually by the U.S. Department of Energy this past weekend.
"This is a pretty impressive feat,'' said MHS science teacher and Science Bowl club adviser Erik Johnson.
The MHS team earned first place in the virtual state competition in January, which qualified them for the national tournament. The team placed among the top 32 teams after the first three rounds of pool play at nationals, which qualified the team for the single-elimination tournament. The team was four points shy of advancing to the round of 16.
The U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl is a nationwide academic competition that tests students’ knowledge in all areas of science and mathematics. Middle and high school student teams from diverse backgrounds are comprised of four students, one alternate, and a teacher who serves as an adviser and coach. These teams face-off in a fast-paced question-and-answer format, being tested on a range of science disciplines including biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, energy, and math.
The Department of Energy created the National Science Bowl in 1991 to encourage students to excel in mathematics and science and to pursue careers in these fields. Approximately 315,000 students have participated in the National Science Bowl® throughout its 30-year history, and it is one of the nation’s largest science competitions.
Beginning in January each year, more than 9,000 high school students and 5,000 middle school students competed in 65 high school and 50 middle school regional Science Bowl tournaments.
