Top help celebrate Black History Month, Madison College has launched a new art exhibit to celebrate black women and honor a former longtime academic advisor.
According to WKOW 27 News, the "Honoring the Black Woman" exhibit will be displayed at The Gallery at Truax and will feature work from more than 15 artists and photographers from Madison and Africa.
"I know seeing it all together and how powerful it is all evening, I felt kind of like I'm on the verge of tears, but it's not necessarily sad," Morgan Jaimes, a member of the Black Women's Affinity Group of Madison College, told 27 News. "It's just such an act of love."
The exhibit was the dream of one of the college's longtime academic advisors Dzigbodi Akyea, who passed away last fall.
"Dzigbodi Akyea worked at Madison College for 17 years and was a cherished member of the Academic Advising Team," Madison College wrote in a Jan. 25 Facebook post. "Dzigbodi was a long-time friend, ally, colleague and an individual with countless talents and gifts. Dzigbodi worked and advocated tirelessly for our students, serving as their voice when they could not find their own."
"Honoring the Black Woman" will be on display for the entire month of February.
