The Madison Police Department is probing a graffiti/property damage complaint at St. Bernard Parish in Madison that included messages left criticizing the church for its pro-life stance in the wake of the Supreme Court’s recent decision overturning Roe vs. Wade.
In addition to now working with the Madison Police Department in hopes of identifying the culprits, church officials issued a statement where Pastor Michael Radowicz pleaded for calm.
“St. Bernard Parish is saddened over the graffiti on the front of the church,” he added. “We understand people's anger over the recent ruling by the Supreme Court, but this does nothing to solve any issues. We join in prayer for those who did this, that the Lord may heal their hearts.”
All the damage done at the church, located at 2450 Atwood Ave., is believed to have taken place overnight, including the blue lettering that was left over the church’s front door and signage in the yard. Other spray-painted messages included accusing the church for of being responsible for the loss of Native American children’s lives.
With the vandalism coming just over a week after the high court’s decision on Roe vs. Wade, WKOW.com reports demonstrators are complaining the church’s actions are not enough.
"The church isn't going to apologize. The church isn't going to save us. And this is this is just the beginning. If we don't see any accountability being taken and if our rights and our concerns are being swept under the rug again," said demonstrator Sam Giguere.
