Today marked the first day of classes for thousands of students at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, as well as many faculty members. This significant day represents a new beginning and the start of new challenges for all involved.
On this occasion, an undergraduate student, a graduate student, and a professor shared their experiences.
Jake Leismer, a first-year undergraduate from Sheboygan, was seen walking up Observatory Hill on his way to his first class. His older sibling is also a student at UW–Madison, while his twin brother attends UW–Eau Claire. During an icebreaker exercise in French 311: Advanced Composition and Conversation in Van Hise Hall, Professor Nevine El-Nossery reviewed notes taken by Leismer and another student. Later, Leismer spoke with classmates before the start of Path-Bio 210: HIV: Sex, Society, and Science in the Sewell Social Sciences building. He is part of the College of Letters & Science Honors Program.
Mariana Santos, a new graduate student in the Department of Plant Pathology originally from Brazil who completed her undergraduate degree at UW–Madison, walked to her first class via Henry Mall. She attended a lecture by Assistant Professor Peter DiGennaro in the DeLuca Biochemistry Building and later enjoyed a morning coffee outside as she prepared for a presentation.
Professor Andi Wang greeted 150 students during his first day teaching Industrial & Systems Engineering 210: Intro to Industrial Statistics in Engineering Hall. Wang recently joined UW–Madison from Arizona State University.
