The University of Wisconsin Women’s Rugby Football Club recently faced off against the University of Minnesota rugby club, narrowly losing 31-30. Despite the loss, the game highlighted the team spirit and physical challenge that motivate many players to join.

“It’s a sport that a lot of people try for the first time in college,” said senior Lily Spanbauer. “I would say, out of our team of 30-plus, probably three or four girls played prior. Most people coming in were new, and they go in advertising that they take people of all skills.”

Club President Kassie Wurtinger and Spanbauer were both newcomers to rugby but were drawn to its strong community and challenging nature.

“Learning a new sport, especially as intricate as rugby, can feel very confusing and like a lot of information, but I have learned the rugby community is so kind and understanding, and they make it a lot easier,” Wurtinger noted.

The recent match showcased not only their skills but also their dedication. The game ended with high spirits despite the close scoreline.

“As women’s rugby players, we’ve always known the value of our sport and women’s sports in general,” said Wurtinger. “This attention not only highlights the sport and its players, but it also creates opportunities for growth.”

Spanbauer emphasized how rugby presented her with new physical challenges compared to her background as a runner. She also addressed misconceptions about women's rugby's physicality.

“In rugby they really do focus on safety and your body positioning,” she explained. “The first thing you learn is how to safely tackle people.”

Wurtinger praised the inclusivity of rugby: “It’s truly designed for all body types, ages, and backgrounds—there’s a role for everyone on the field.” She added that this inclusivity is particularly empowering for women.

The University of Wisconsin Women’s Rugby Football Club continues to grow closer through competitions like these while promoting awareness and involvement in women's rugby.
