The City of Madison is seeking nominations for the annual Jeffrey Clay Erlanger Civility in Public Discourse Award. This award pays tribute to Jeffrey Clay Erlanger, known for his integrity and dedication to public service. Despite being a lifelong quadriplegic due to complications from a spinal tumor, Erlanger was committed to civil advocacy and effective representation.
Mayor Rhodes-Conway highlighted the diverse community leaders previously recognized by the award, stating, “Over the years, the Erlanger award has recognized a variety of community leaders, from health care advocates, our poet laureate, former alders, a neighborhood association leader, and leaders of local non-profits.” She encouraged residents to nominate individuals who exhibit similar qualities as Jeff Erlanger.
Erlanger's involvement in public service included roles such as chairing the Commission on People with Disabilities and advocating for accessible taxicab services in Madison. In honor of his contributions, an accessible playground at Rennebohm Park bears his name.
This year’s award criteria have been expanded to include residents of the entire Madison metropolitan area. The award seeks nominees who demonstrate leadership in public advocacy and maintain civility and respect in their interactions. Both the recipient and nominator will designate a charity to receive $250 each.
Eligible nominees must be adults residing in the Madison metropolitan area whose efforts have positively impacted the community. They should exemplify fairness and openness while contributing effectively to public discourse. Current members of certain city roles are not eligible for nomination.
Nominations must be detailed enough for committee evaluation without additional research and submitted by November 1, 2024. Forms can be sent via email or mailed to the Mayor’s Office.
A selection committee appointed by the Mayor includes representatives from various sectors including a member of the Erlanger family. The award will be presented at a Common Council meeting in December.
