Over 50 student artists participated in the University of Wisconsin–Madison Art Department's Annual Open Studio Day on November 2. The event took place at the Art Lofts and Humanities Building, offering visitors a chance to meet the artists and explore their workspaces.
Rachael Hunter, an art student and painter, expressed her enthusiasm about the event. "I met so many interesting people and had a huge variety of conversations. Some friends even stopped by to write or draw a little something on my walls, so I'll have reminders of them in my space," she said. She also mentioned visiting graduate printing studios, noting that "the artists there are so inspiring and talented."
Hunter described her painting style as focusing on figures in unsettling situations, using vibrant colors like bright blues and reds. Her piece titled "Oh Jeez, They're All Tangled Up" was displayed during the event.
The Open Studio Day featured various other students' works across different mediums. Wylie Knight worked on his paintings in the advanced studio, while Kate Goodvin explored printmaking at the Art Lofts. Jackelin Espinosa Moyotl also showcased her artwork in the printmaking lab.
Amber Mans collaborated with Anne Morin to create glass ornaments at the glass lab. Other participants included Casey Fletcher, who opened his studio for visitors; Victoria Zaraza, who displayed ceramic glazes; Jessica Sharp creating paper sheets; Anna Campbell demonstrating a "Draw Bot"; Thomas Zickuhr guiding visitors through the Neon Lab; and Hunter Larson working on ceramics.
The event provided a platform for students to share their creative processes and engage with attendees interested in their artistic endeavors.
