Lauren Choi, a freshman at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, chose the institution after being accepted to 15 out of 20 universities she applied to. Despite initially ranking UW–Madison low on her list, Choi was swayed by the school's welcoming atmosphere and an attractive financial aid package.

Choi's decision came as a surprise even to herself. "The school I had never really considered became my most obvious choice," she said. The factors that influenced her decision included UW–Madison’s reputation, campus friendliness, and a financial aid offer that covered more than just tuition.

Choi had initially been hesitant about attending UW–Madison due to her older sister Ashley's connection with the university. "I felt like my sister had already laid claim to the school," Choi explained. However, during her visit to the campus, she was impressed by how happy everyone seemed and appreciated the support system for first-generation college students.

UW–Madison sealed the deal with Bucky’s Pell Pathway program, which covers full educational expenses for eligible students from Wisconsin who qualify for federal Pell Grants. This initiative made it financially feasible for Choi to attend without accruing debt.

Derek Kindle, vice provost for enrollment management at UW–Madison, highlighted the impact of such programs: “Bucky’s Pell Pathway is helping ensure that exceptional students like Lauren know that their home state not only has an institution that provides a world-class education but is one that wants to support them.”

Choi also joined the Center for Educational Opportunity (CeO) on campus, providing academic support services for first-generation students among others. She now works part-time with CeO and feels confident in her choice of college.

Despite initial reservations about following in her sister's footsteps, Choi has found value in Ashley's advice and guidance during her transition into university life.
