Jana Schmieding, known for her roles in "Rutherford Falls" and "Reservation Dogs," recently spoke at UW–Madison as the keynote speaker for Native November. Schmieding, a comedian and Lakota Native, highlighted how humor plays a crucial role in connecting the Indigenous community with their culture.
During the event held at Memorial Union’s Play Circle Theater, Schmieding engaged in a discussion moderated by UW–Madison students. The conversation covered topics such as Indigenous visibility and social justice. Kalista Cadotte, the social activism chair for Wunk Sheek, and Sierra Skenandore from the Indigenous Student Center led the Q&A session.
The audience was actively involved, with ISC COUSIN Silas Cleveland participating during the Q&A. Following her talk, Schmieding took photos with attendees Isabella Escobar-Aviles and Ana Gabriela Escobar-Aviles.
Members of the Indigenous Student Center Coalition also joined Schmieding after the session to capture memories of the event.
