The Streets Division has announced its schedule for curbside Christmas tree collection, offering two rounds of service in early 2025. The first round is set to commence on January 6, while the second will begin on January 21, following Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Collection dates are subject to change based on weather conditions, as snowstorm response takes precedence.
Residents are reminded that only trees will be collected; wreaths, boughs, and other evergreen decorations should be disposed of with regular trash due to their potential to damage wood chipping equipment. For successful curbside pickup, residents must adhere to specific guidelines: remove tree stands and all decorations, and do not bag the trees.
To ensure collection during the first round, trees should be placed at the designated curb area by 6:30 a.m. on January 6. If placed later, they may not be picked up until the second round. Similarly, for the second round of collection starting January 21, trees must be out by 6:30 a.m. Trees left out after this time risk missing both rounds of pickup.
Trees need to be accessible for collection crews and should be placed at least four feet away from obstacles such as utility poles or fire hydrants. Crews will not enter private property for tree retrieval.
In case of snowstorms, tree collection will halt as crews shift focus to plowing duties. Residents are advised to clear any snow or ice covering their trees since crews cannot collect trees frozen in place.
For those unable to meet curbside collection requirements or who prefer an alternative option, Madison residents can drop off their holiday trees at designated Streets Division sites. Details regarding locations and hours can be found on the drop-off sites website.
Collected trees are transported to the Streets Division's brush processing center where they are converted into mulch. Further information about tree collection and other winter city operations is available on the City of Madison’s Winter website at www.cityofmadison.com/winter.
