Due to anticipated subzero temperatures on January 21, 2025, residents in certain areas may face delays in trash and recycling collection. The Streets Division has outlined several steps for residents to ensure smooth operations during this period.

Residents are advised to have their carts ready for pickup by 6:30 a.m. as per their regular schedule. Those with scheduled collections on January 21 should place their carts out on time. It is important to note that the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on January 20 will shift Monday pickups to Tuesday.

In cases where carts were not collected despite being out on time, the division will return on January 22 to complete missed routes. Residents can also submit a report-a-problem if necessary.

Rear-loading collection vehicles are typically used in narrow areas of Madison, and these require operators to manually empty carts into the truck. The cold weather presents challenges for crews working outside for extended periods. "Of course, the crews assigned to this work will be bundled up and ready for this important, yet frigid, work on this day," stated the release. Safety remains a priority while crews perform their duties in such conditions.

Most collections are done using automated trucks equipped with robotic arms that lift and empty carts without requiring the operator to leave the vehicle. This process minimizes delays for many residents.

The division assures residents that they are committed to completing all routes safely and efficiently within these constraints.
