The local bicycle advocacy group, Madison Bikes, is organizing a Winter Bike Day on February 14. This event aims to demonstrate that biking is feasible throughout the year, even during Wisconsin's snowy winters.
Madison Bikes envisions a city where cycling is accessible and comfortable year-round. Christo Alexander, vice president of Madison Bikes, expressed the group's mission: "Madison Bikes wants to show that biking for transportation should not be limited to fair weather days. We want Madisonians to know that with a little preparation, biking year-round can be done by anyone. We're going to be out on Winter Bike Day to encourage and celebrate that and we'd love to see you there!"
In celebration of International Winter Bike Day, Madison Bikes will collaborate with the City of Madison for several events. On Friday morning from 7-9 a.m., cyclists can enjoy complimentary coffee from Café Domestique and doughnuts provided by Madison Bikes at the Capital City Path near the Monona Terrace bike elevator. Staff from Greater Madison MPO will also be present to discuss RoundTrip, a program offering alternatives to solo driving.
Later in the day, participants are invited to a happy hour at Working Draft Beer located at 1129 E. Wilson St. Cyclists who bring their helmets and display their Bike Benefits sticker will receive a 10% discount on purchases. Working Draft offers both alcoholic brews and non-alcoholic options.
Winter biking provides an opportunity for exercise while experiencing the scenic views of Madison from a different perspective.
